Get snuggled in with this fantastic collection of winter Hygge ideas for your home. All curated for you so you can enjoy the benefits of a cosy home throughout the coldest months, without having to search for inspiration. What are you waiting for?…
I love making the house cosy and inviting at all times of the year, but winter is very special because home is where you want to be when the weather is wet, cold, and just miserable (or is that just the UK?!)
That’s why I’ve jumped on the Hygge train (bet that would be the comfiest train I’ve ever been on lol) – as it sums up this cosiness SO well.
I’ve looked at what Hygge actually IS, and curated a collection of gorgeous Home Decor items that would add Hygge to your home this Winter – and lastly, gone through the 7 key products that will give your home Hygge with ease.
So – let’s get started, shall we?
What Is Hygge?
Let’s start at the beginning….
The word hygge comes from a Danish word meaning “to give courage, comfort, joy” (source: Wikipedia).
It’s pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ (I was saying it wrong for ages!)
Collins English Dictionary defines the word as “a concept, originating in Denmark, of creating cosy and convivial atmospheres that promote wellbeing.”
Anything that can give a sense of wellbeing to a home is a good thing in my book, as I’m sure it is for you too – right?!
It was introduced to me a while back by a friend who bought me this book: –
Why is Hygge so popular?
I think that it pays everyone to take a step back at times – appreciating and acknowledging what we’ve got.
More and more people are paying attention to the fact that experiences can mean a lot more than ‘stuff’ – and although Hygge DOES look at what we have, it focuses on how that makes us feel rather than the stuff itself. It’s a much better take on things, and one that I fully agree with.
After all – if we can love our homes and feel good in them – then life overall will be easier.
We will feel more at peace before we have to face the outside world, and home will be a place that we can rejuvenate. That sounds pretty perfect to me!
I love the concept – and although the more traditional Danish style isn’t necessarily mine – I’ve wanted to embrace the feeling and concept that it conveys from then on.
So – come with me on a Winter look through of Hygge that I have curated just for you (and with my own style in mind, which may give you inspiration either for the exact same style, or for the types of things to get)….

Key Items To Focus On For Winter Hygge
#1 – Cushions & Throws
Whether fur, chunky knits, velvet – or another cosy fabric – layering lots on your sofa and bed will make your home look more inviting than almost anything else!
#2 – Candles
Another favourite of mine!
I love having some fake candles that are on a timer because these will be on and welcoming when I get home – lovely!
… and then, some real candles made from natural wax (it’s better for you), with a gorgeous wintery scent, are a must.
#3 – Lights
Lighting done right can make all the difference to creating a warm and cosy feel.
I love using Edison bulbs (they are the old fashioned style), and ALWAYS get lamps and lights that are dimmable whenever possible.
#4 – Bedding
Ready to cosy up and listen to the storms and rain outside – while warm in bed?
The trick to having this is to layer different fabrics with a selection of blankets, throws and cushions alongside your duvet and pillows – so you can literally sink into your bed in the evening.
TIP – Using a fleece bedding set would be perfect in Winter if you like the idea of more cosiness, but don’t like having lots of layers to deal with.
#5 – A Rug
I have a sheepskin (faux!) rug at the foot of my bed, and WOW – so so lovely to sink my feet into in the morning, and I fully recommend it!
Having a few rugs in your living areas as well – especially when you have hard floors – will make a massive change in look and feel for the winter.
#6 – A Fire
Light a fire if you have a real fireplace, or a fake one – and if you don’t, then you can still get the look of fire with a table top fire bowl (yes – they exist!)..
#7 – Cosy Furniture
And last but not least – furniture can be very Hygge this Winter if you choose deep colours, rich fabrics – and a cosy feel.
I love using footstools, love seats, and other occasional items that can be brought in when the weather turns colder.
So there you have it! – lots of inspiration and ideas to create Hygge with your Home Decor this Winter.
I love creating that cosy feel, and I can’t wait for you to do the same to your home too.
