No matter how full your day is, you need to enjoy at least some of it. It makes all the rest much more do-able – and we all deserve as much happiness as possible, right?

Busy days have a way of swallowing us whole, donโt they?
You start off with the best intentions, but before you know it youโre racing from one thing to the next, and collapsing at the end of the day wondering where the time went.
But hereโs the secret: joy doesnโt only come in big blocks of time like holidays or weekends. You can weave small, simple pockets of it into the middle of even the busiest day. And often, those tiny things end up being the moments you remember most.
Here are 10 easy ways to add joy to your day – without needing more hours in the day.
1. Start with something you actually enjoy
Instead of diving straight into chores, news, or rushing, give yourself a few minutes of something you genuinely like.
It sets the tone for the whole day.
For me, itโs my first coffee, drunk slowly while standing by the back door. No phone, no chatter, just that quiet โahhhโ moment. It only takes five minutes, but it makes all the difference.

2. Step outside for a breath of fresh air
It sounds almost too simple, but thereโs something about stepping outdoors that instantly shifts your mood. Sunlight, a breeze, the sound of birds – even if itโs just on your doorstep.
One of my friends takes her tea outside every afternoon, even if itโs raining. She swears it resets her head more than any nap could.
3. Light a candle or use a scent you love
Scent has a powerful effect on how we feel.
Lighting a candle while you cook dinner, spraying a favourite perfume just for yourself, or using a hand cream you love – tiny sensory boosts like this can lift the most ordinary moment.
4. Add music to the mundane
Washing up, folding laundry, or tidying the house feels different when youโve got a playlist you love in the background.
Joy doesnโt have to mean stopping doing what you don’t enjoy. Sometimes itโs just making the boring things feel better.
Why not create a playlist for yourself that makes the dullest jobs feel like fun? I love singing at the top of my voice as well – which always boosts my mood (I just always try and remember to close the windows first – my neighbours don’t need that noise in their day!).
5. Create a mini ritual with your drinks
Tea, coffee, squash, water – whatever your go-to, turn it into a ritual instead of just a grab-and-go.
Use your favourite mug, have a specific type of drink that’s ‘special’ for you, sit down while you drink it, maybe even have a specific chair to sit in while you drink it and relax.
I quite like herbal tea – so to make this more special, I bought a glass teapot and warmer (using a tea light under it). It feels SO nice to light that candle and enjoy that experience…
Treating that everyday drink as a pause point can make your day feel much less like a blur.
6. Send a quick message to someone you like
Connection is joy.
A quick โthinking of youโ text, a funny meme, a shared Instagram reel, or a voice note can brighten both your day and theirs.
It doesnโt need to be long – itโs about the reminder that youโre not in this alone.
7. Notice one lovely thing
It might be the sky, a flower in the garden, or how cosy your blanket feels. Choosing to notice one small lovely thing each day builds a quiet kind of joy.
Iโve started pointing these out to my daughter – โlook at the view from the car!โ โ and now she does it back to me. Itโs become a lovely little family habit.
Extra idea – you can do this as an evening ritual – think of 3 or 5 things that you’ve loved today. Gratitude for even the smallest things creates ripples of positivity throughout your day.
8. Swap screens for paper (just for a bit)
We spend so much time on phones and laptops that it all blurs after a while.
Take away the screens and get a little joy back. I know I always find it easier to brainstorm with a pen and paper rather than make notes on my laptop. I read somewhere that it’s scientifically proven to help you remember things when you write it down physically.
You could reading a few pages of a book instead of from your Kindle, doodling instead of scrolling Facebook, writing a diary in a notebook, or doing a crossword.
Itโs a simple way to give your brain a refreshing change of pace – and really does feel different (in a good way!).
9. Treat yourself to a โtiny luxuryโ
This doesnโt have to mean shopping.
It could be using the fancy bubble bath, the good biscuits, or wearing the perfume you usually save for best.
Lifeโs too short to keep joy for special occasions only.
10. End the day with something that feels like yours
Instead of scrolling until your eyes close, finish your day with something small but deliberate.
A chapter of a book, five minutes of stretching, or even just climbing into bed with fresh sheets (my personal favourite! – I’d change my sheets daily if I could!).
Itโs a little way of saying: this day is mine, not just a list of tasks.

Joy doesnโt need to wait for the weekend, or a holiday, or even for a โfree day.โ
You can build it into the nooks and crannies of your everyday life.
Try picking just one of these pockets this week and notice how your day feels different.
