A key part of creating a great bedroom is choosing the right flooring. Not sure where to start? Here are some top tips on how to choose a rug for a bedroom.

How To Choose A Bedroom Rug - 7 Things You Need To Know

Your bedroom is your sanctuary – a place where you can relax and escape the stresses of everyday life.

A key part of creating this relaxing space is picking out the right rug. But how do you make sure you choose the right one?

Here are 7 things you need to consider:

The 7 Things You Need To Think About When Buying A Rug

1. Size

When choosing a rug for your bedroom, it’s important to look at the size of the room.

When the rug is small, then it can look lost in a large space, but equally a large rug can overwhelm a small space very quickly.

So what’s the ideal size for a bedroom rug?

In general, aim to choose a rug that is large enough to fit under your bed. This will ensure that the rug is a focal point in the room and makes a big impact.

Alternatively, you could pick a rug that sits width ways on the base of the bed – to sort of finish off the bed’s look.

Quick Tip #1 – Measure, Measure, and Measure again!

Always measure the space you’ve got to work with. Ideally sketch the room out a bit so you can see what would work in terms of shape as well as size.

This means that when you go out shopping, or look online, you can be sure that what you’re looking at getting will actually work well and not be too large/small.

2. Shape

The next thing to consider is shape. There are lots of shapes to consider:

  • Round
  • Square
  • Rectangular
  • Oval
  • Irregular

To help you decide, look at the shape of the room and the shape of the furniture or decor in the room.

If there’s a lot of a certain shape, then that’s the shape to go for as it will feel right in the space.

3. Colour

In terms of colour, it depends on whether you want to make a statement with your rug or you want it to blend in more.

Statements can be made by picking a bold, bright, or contrasting colour in the room.

Blending in could mean a soft version of the colour already used, or a neutral toned rug.

Also think about whether it needs to be lighter or darker in the room.

A rug is a large item and so will make it’s presence felt whether it’s dark or light – but if you’re going for a specific look, then one may be more preferential than the other.

Quick Tip #2 – Take Samples

It’s always worth taking a sample of any colours you already have in your bedroom so you can match colours with the rug – or get the softer / bolder versions of them.

Why guess?!! (take paint swatches, wallpaper samples, fabric samples – or even some photos as long as the colours are pretty accurate from good lighting!).

Should the rug be lighter or darker than the floor?

This is a matter of personal preference.

If you want the rug to be a focal point in the room, then make it a different colour to the floor so that it stands out.

However, if you want the rug to blend in more and not be too noticeable, then choose a similar colour or shade to the floor.

4. Material

When it comes to material, you have a few different options:

  • Wool rugs are durable and easy to clean, but they can be more expensive.
  • Synthetic rugs are cheaper but they may not last as long.
  • You could also choose a natural fibre rug like jute or sisal – although these can feel quite rough under foot.
  • What about a sheepskin or fluffy style? A bedroom can afford a more cosy feel to the rug as it will be likely that it’s walked on last thing at night and first thing in the morning the majority of the time.

Also in material is what the pile is like. Pile is the depth of the rug. You can get deep pile which is lovely and cosy for a bedroom, but equally can feel quite bulky in a room, whereas a low pile can be a good choice for a simple and streamlined rug.

5. Pattern

Rugs come in all manner of patterns – so you need to ask yourself if you want a pattern or if a plain rug would be better.

From a decor point of view it’s worth looking at the rest of the space.

If there’s a lot of pattern already then it may be better to keep the rug more simple. But if there’s hardly any pattern in the room then this may be your chance to add some in.

Whatever your choice – still make sure that your chosen pattern (stripes, abstract, spots, floral etc…) matches the feel of the rest of the room…

6. Style

Do you want a traditional rug or something more modern?

Again, a lot of this will be determined by the style of the house, the room, and the decor that’s already there.

7. Budget

Last but not least, you need to consider your budget.

Rugs can range in price from affordable to very expensive, and it’s important to find one that fits the amount you’re happy to spend.

Don’t be afraid to experiment

After all – rules are made to be broken when it comes to interior design!

If you have a small bedroom, you can still choose a large rug – just make sure it has a low pile so it doesn’t take up too much space.

In a large bedroom, you have the opportunity to choose a truly statement-making rug.

Go for something with a bold pattern, bright colours, or something totally contrasting to the style of the rest of the room – to make a real impact in the space.

Remember, you can always experiment with different sizes and shapes of rugs until you find the perfect one for your bedroom!
