Did you know that there are some things that are relatively cheap, and easy to find – that you can add to your home that can make a HUGE difference during the Autumn Months? Here’s what they are, and why you should have at least 1 in your home at this time of year.

The 1 Simple Thing That Will Make Your Home Cosier, Healthier, And Happier This Autumn

As the weather cools and the days get shorter, there’s nothing quite like settling into a cosy corner of the house and just curling up (it’s definitely a favourite for me!).

But if you really want to make your space feel even more inviting this Autumn, did you know that houseplants could be your secret weapon.

Yup – seriously! As a houseplant lover, I was so please to find this out!

Not only do they add a fresh, natural vibe, but they come with a load of health benefits that make your home comfier and healthier.

So, grab a cuppa, put your feet up, and let’s chat about why bringing some greenery indoors is the best way to get your home a little more Autumn-ready!

Cleaner Air, Happier Home

When the temperatures drop and the heating goes on, we tend to keep our windows shut, and this means a lot less fresh air and more indoor pollutants hanging around.

If you’re not keen on keeping windows open (I do in my bedroom all year round, but it’s taken a good few years to get used to it!), don’t worry – your houseplants have got your back!

A Clean Air study from NASA no less(!) found that certain plants can actually filter out common toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia. These are all things that can come from stuff in our homes like furniture, cleaning products, and cooking.

But if you include plants like the trusty Snake Plant (Sansevieria) and the elegant Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) in your home, they work as natural air purifiers, and so you can more easily keep the air in your home fresh and breathable.

You’re not only adding a bit of greenery, but you’re also improving the quality of the air you’re breathing.

Plus, they release oxygen too, so your home will feel lighter and fresher – win-win!

Say Goodbye to Dry Air

As soon as we start cranking up the heating, the air in our homes can become super dry. Cue the dry skin, irritated sinuses, and that all-too-familiar stuffy feeling.

This is where your plants come to the rescue again.

Through a process called transpiration, they release moisture into the air, which can help balance things out and make your home feel less dry and much more comfortable.

Jo, founder of Beards & Daisies and author of The Unkillables, says, “Many people overlook how effective plants are at balancing humidity levels in the home. During Autumn when the air gets drier, your plants can act as natural humidifiers. They make your home not only feel warmer but also healthier.”

So, if you’re tired of feeling parched and stuffy, a few moisture-loving plants (like ferns or Peace Lilies) could be just the thing to keep you feeling fresh.

Plants: The Perfect Stress-Busters

Autumn’s a time to slow down, relax, and enjoy those cosy nights in – but let’s be honest, the shorter, darker days can sometimes bring a bit of a downer. Another reason to add lots of plants to your space – as they’re great for giving your mood a lift.

In fact, studies have shown that being around plants can lower stress, reduce blood pressure, and improve your overall sense of well-being. And let’s face it, we could all do with a little boost as the days get darker!

Nurturing a plant gives you something positive to focus on, and that little bit of care can really make a difference when everything outside feels a bit gloomy.

Plus, with houseplants adding a calming, peaceful vibe to your home, they’re the perfect way to create a little sanctuary where you can escape the hustle and bustle of life.

If you’re prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), having plants around can also help lift your spirits – they’re like little green mood boosters.

Refresh Your Autumn Décor

Houseplants aren’t just good for your health – they’re also a fab way to update your Autumn décor.

The lush green of indoor plants looks amazing alongside those classic autumn colours like burnt orange, deep reds, and golds.

Whether you go big with a statement plant like a Monstera, or add a few cute little succulents here and there, plants bring a fresh, organic feel to any space.

“Houseplants can easily be integrated into your seasonal decorations,” says Jo from Beards & Daisies. “Try placing a few trailing plants on a bookshelf or adding a large potted fern next to a cosy reading nook. Not only will it look great, but it will create a sense of warmth and life that’s hard to replicate with other décor.”

Imagine a snug corner with a big leafy Philodendron or a string of trailing plants cascading from a shelf – instant cosy vibes!.

Easy-Care Plants to Try This Autumn

If you’re new to the world of houseplants, or just want something that’s super low-maintenance, don’t worry – there are plenty of plants that are perfect for autumn and don’t need much looking after.

  • ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia): This one’s a tough cookie! It thrives in low light and barely needs watering, so it’s ideal for those of us who sometimes forget to water.
  • Monaco Orchid: This stunning orchid with its peachy-orange petals is a real showstopper. Plus, it comes in a chic white pot, so it’s all set to elevate your autumn décor.
  • Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum): Known for its air-purifying powers, this fast-growing plant is easy to care for, and its stripy leaves add a lovely bit of texture to your space.
  • Calathea Rufibarba: With deep green leaves on top and a striking purple underside, this beauty adds a bit of tropical flair – perfect for brightening up those grey autumn days.
  • Philodendron: The heart-shaped leaves of a Philodendron make it a favourite. Plus, it’s happy in indirect light, which means it’ll thrive in most rooms – low-maintenance and lovely!
