Myself and my family have just been away for a long weekend – having picked the sunniest and hottest October weekend on record (temp in the late 20’s!).
While we were away it struck me that although this was a great holiday, and felt very relaxing, it wasn’t a “much needed” one, like so many people feel when they go away.
Now – this isn’t because we are away every few weeks – in fact this was our first break since January! – so it got me thinking about why we don’t really feel we desperately need a holiday and why we aren’t a very holiday-oriented family at all.
People do question our logic, assuming more often than not that we are depriving ourselves, but we have never really felt that way.
When we go away we love it, but we don’t live for holidays, and are quite happy (excited even) to go back home when its finished.
Me being me, I tried to pinpoint why! – It came to me that its simple really – we have created a great balanced life for ourselves when we are at home, that ensures we are happy (as much as possible anyway!).
Going back to a previous blog about living a balanced life – using the acronym S.M.I.L.E really works for us. My husband and I ensure that we regularly chat about our (naturally) changing needs, priorities, goals etc.. in our lives. He tries not to bring his job home, and ALWAYS prioritises the family over work (while still creating himself a fantastic career), and I try and manage the house while owning a home based business and ensuring our 3 year old daughter is happy.
In a nutshell, we have the balance right, and don’t take things for granted.
Its not easy – but nothing good is really – is it!
We are not perfect. Absolutely far from it. We have had more than our fair share of tragedy, loss, bad luck and illness – but I think that without this we may not have made it our priority to live the life that we love, all year round.
So if your holiday feels more like an extra relaxing extension of your current day to day life, CONGRATULATIONS! You have organised your life so that its balanced, rewarding and keeps you motivated.
If not, why not really look at your goals and priorities a little closer, and make it a goal to achieve the life that you have always wanted EVERY DAY!
Everyone has a different version of the ideal, and what you create will be a unique as your own fingerprint, but you will definitely have fun along the way!!
