3 ways to use self storage to make home life easier

All the things I talk about and bring to you on this blog are because I genuinely think they will help with some part of homemaking and getting more organised – and self storage** is one of those topics I have yet to cover in any real depth.

Self storage can be a really useful tool to have in your kit when used in the right way – and that’s why I have put together this post on the 3 main ways I think that it can really help.

Self storage can be a great help - and here are the 3 main ways I would use it

Why use self storage at all?

Let me tackle the first pressing issue right from the start – why use self storage** at all?

Surely it’s just moving the issue of clutter away from sight and not allowing you to tackle the real issue?

To some people self storage is used just to move the clutter from your home – and this is something that this blog doesn’t agree with at all – but, if used in the right way, self storage can be an amazing help for so many things.

I firmly agree with using self storage when life events need it – and those life events are what I have focused on in the list below.

However you use self storage – make sure that you only store what you really and truly need to store at any given time, and there should be a plan for what happens to it in the long run.

So, without further ado – here’s my top 3:-

#1 – Moving House

Moving house is number one in the list for 2 very good reasons.

Firstly – you need to have your home looking it’s very best when you are selling your home, and secondly you need to make it as easy as possible to move house in the time frames that work for you.

Selling your home

When selling your home, creating as much space is key. Most people move house in order to get more room, so if your home looks cluttered and stuffed to the brim then the buyer will immediately think it won’t be big enough for them, and they will simply move on.

Having a declutter before you put your home on the market will pay dividends. Not only will your home look better in the marketing pictures, but it will also make the actual move go much quicker as there will be less to move.

Self storage works well here for any items that you don’t need to use before you move, but that you want to take with you:-

  • Outdoor toys and furniture
  • Christmas Decorations
  • Seasonal Clothes
  • Memorabilia
  • Books and Media
  • Garage contents (tools etc…)
  • Rarely used kitchen equipment and occasion items (serving dishes etc…)

You can store them away for the short term, safe in the knowledge that they can come back to you as soon as you have moved.

Moving house

There will be times when moving house may require you not to move straight into your new home.

Maybe you want a few weeks to do some work on the house, such as refurbishments, or you may simply want a few days to clean the new house and add new carpet without having to move all your things around in the process.

Using self storage for the short term can help to alleviate the stress that could otherwise have been caused, and your things can move in as soon as you are ready.

#2 – Having an extension

When we had an extension, and did some extensive refurbishment on our home, we stored everything we really didn’t need away from the house – and it was wonderful!

Living with only what we truly needed meant there was no stress of trying to keep everything clean, dust free, moved out of harms way etc… while the builders and tradespeople were doing their work.

Not only that, but it was like Christmas when everything was finished and we got our stuff back!

#3 – Going away?

There are many times in life where you may be going away from your home for an extended period, and want to free up space in your home:-

  • You are going travelling for a few months and want to rent your home out while you are away
  • You live abroad for a portion of the year, and want to secure your belongings when away
  • You have had a job offer for a couple of years abroad and need to rent your home when away
  • You may be at University and don’t want to transport everything home in the holidays
  • You may be having guests for an extended stay and need extra space

Ways to use self storage that can really help when going through certain times in your life.

Freeing up space in your home for specific reasons can take away stress and worry during times that you tend to have enough other things to worry about, and as such I would recommend self storage for times when you have to deal with big life events so that it helps make them go that little more smoothly!

Do you use self storage for any other reasons, or have you used it for any of the above reasons before? I’d love to know so please leave a comment below – thanks in advance!
