MyFitnessPal – A Review

& FILED IN Self Care

At this time of year a lot of people tend to look at losing weight and getting fit.

A new year, a fresh start.

As such, I wanted to write a post about a great app that I have been using for the past year, and which has really helped me to keep track of things.

Its called MyFitnessPal.

What is MyFitnessPal?

MyFitnessPal can be found on the web, and is also available in apps on android and iphones – and the best news is that its COMPLETELY FREE to use!

The creators of MyFitnessPal have this to say about it:-

“Losing weight isn’t easy – we know. But with a membership to, you’ll get the tools you need to successfully take weight off – and keep it off ………

Study after study has confirmed the benefits of keeping track of the food you eat and the activity you do. It’s simple – the more consistently you track your food intake, the more likely you are to lose weight. That’s why every successful weight management program suggests that you keep a food diary and/or an activity log. But recording everything you eat without the right tools can be tedious at best, or simply impossible at worst.

At, we focus on making sure you can log your meals as quickly and easily as possible. Because the easier we make it for you, the more likely you are to stay on track, and the more likely you are to succeed in your weight loss goals.”

I downloaded the app to my android phone, with a view to seeing how it went basically – and found to my amazement that it really is just as quick and easy to use as it says.

How do I use MyFitnessPal?

Basically you have to put in your weight and height, and activity levels (moderate, none etc….). You also say whether you are looking to maintain your current weight, or want to lose a specific amount per week.

The it calculates what your daily calorie intake should be.

You can then on a daily basis enter what you have eaten, and what you have done in terms of exercise – and the goal is to keep to your target calorie count each day.

Obviously if you do lots of exercise it adds more available calories to eat/drink that day – which is always a bonus – and I love that it shows the link between exercise and eating so clearly.

fitness pal logoAnyone looking to lose weight, follow a diet, maintain a current weight, or simply wanting to keep track of things including exercise levels etc….

People who are more numbers oriented will find a great sense of accomplishment each day when they reach their targets – and its a really motivational tool with a competitive edge!

What are the positives of MyFitnessPal?

  • The list of foods and drinks and exercises that the system knows is amazing! It will also find branded items – so you can pretty much be sure that you are tracking things accurately which is a great help!
  • Its very eye opening to see what your foods calorie content is, as some are so much more and some so much less than you may think – even a daily milky coffee soon adds up….. Basically it makes you good at choosing the better for you items when you have to make a choice in the shops, which can’t be bad!
  • It also remembers your favourite items, and has a quick list section where they are – as it knows that we are mostly creatures of habit and eat the same things most of the time – which makes it even quicker to record what you are eating.
  • You can link with friends so they can see whether you have recorded your stats for that day, or if you were  under your calorie goal etc.. – and they can message you – so its a great motivation to get recording!
  • It doesn’t let you roll calories over onto the next day – so its always a fresh start – which I find quite nice as you can start again if you have had a bad day!
  • Its very sensible – if you have too few calories one day then it will give you a word of warning – so it should keep you safely within recommended limits, and healthy.
  • You can even record cleaning the house as exercise – which makes me polish and hoover that bit faster!!! (and turn the music up on my stereo)

What are the negatives of MyFitnessPal?

I really can’t find any!

The only thing I can think of is that is does get addictive! – you want to ensure you hit your target each day – and as such you may find yourself going on an unexpected walk to gain some extra calories – but is that really a bad thing!……

What are others saying about MyFitnessPal?

I must be psychic or something, as the Daily Mail today has just posted about MyFitnessPal!

If you are looking to lose weight, or maintain your current weight – and want to record it easily and quickly – get the app!
