{Daily Task #47} – Book Declutter

Task #47:

Go through all the books in your house and sort out a pile of any that you don’t want/need any longer.

My Tips and Advice:

Every house has books – whether its just a few dotted around, or a whole library’s worth in a study.

The thing is, we don’t always read a book more than once, but feel bad for getting rid of it – so we get into the habit of adding it to a shelf somewhere, and basically it becomes part of the decor.

All this does is add to your dusting, and adds to the sense of clutter in the space – so the best thing to do is periodically have a sort through them all.

Make your way around the house, and get the family involved with their books (you can’t make decisions on their behalf as this wouldn’t be fair).

Decide which ones you love, which you will read or need again, and which you can actually let go.

There are a great many places to take these books – charity shops, friends and family – and even selling them on in places such as Amazon and Ebay can make a small profit.

The key is to get them out of your home. These books are clutter if they aren’t being read or used at all – so give them to someone who will love them!

How did you get on?

i have tons of books. they are among my hardest possessions to part with. Recently I got down some good questions when deciding whether or not to keep book by book: 1. Do I really like this? 2. If it is non fiction- is the information current enough to be that worthwhile, or would I end up going online for more complete/ up to date info? 3. Is any book Im planning to get rid of in decent enough shape and current enough info that a book buyback place would buy, and if not, it goes to thrift store and not book buy back place. Is the book one that would be more treasured by someone else, than me? ( makes me feel good to have given something to someone whom I can make happy. Susan r

      Hi Susan
Thanks for your comment – great questions to ask and I’m sure others will appreciate this list – I hope your decluttering goes OK – and remember, its only clutter if you really don’t want it any more ;o) Chrissy
