STEP 2 – CREATE A MOOD BOARD
I always create a mood board when designing room schemes for clients, and for my own home as well – as it’s such a good way to clearly be able to see what you are going for, and what you will get, with your own room.
It doesn’t have to be anything grand – you will need the following: –
- Large sheet of paper
- Catalogues / items printed out from online
Try and find a picture of everything you will be putting in the room (take photos of your current items as well), and stick everything down on a large piece on paper – and you’re done!
It’s like creating the room in a visual form before you get started – again it’s another step that helps to iron out any obvious issues you may see at a stage where it’s easy to change things.
Think of it as insurance!

So there you have it – create a brainstorm of what you want to achieve to make sure there are no obvious conflicts in what you want and need, and then create a mood board to see how the space will look and feel, and you will be able to start the hard work of decorating and styling the room with a lot more confidence that what you are doing will work and you will be happy with it.
Hopefully doing these two things will dramatically cut your chances of wasting any money / time or energy – and that’s no bad thing!
